What We Wore in Costa Rica

This was our first time in Costa Rica and we were ready for some adventure and relaxation. We needed to coordinate clothes that were made for both activities, so we made sure to pack both leisure and athleisure styles for our visit in April.
ATHLEISURE
For hiking, we both decided it was best to wear something that was lightweight and breathable. We were in Costa Rica during the start of the wet season, so the chances of some light rain showers during our hikes were pretty high.
We both wore the Trekkie pant that slightly differed in style. Crystal wore a cropped pant and I wore a jogger pant. We both love Athleta's slim fit and the numerous pockets their pants have. Especially pockets with zippers!
Since the weather was off-and-on rain throughout the day, we opted for a short hiking route to a nearby waterfall from our villa. We also had to drive a little bit and it was Crystal's first time driving through a river!
When we arrived at the waterfall, it was picture perfect. We wanted to jump in and we were glad that we decided to wear our bikinis underneath. The great thing about Athleta swimwear is that they are made to perform.
I wore my bikini top and hiked with exceptional comfort. It was just like wearing a yoga bra, but my favorite feature were the straps. They are adjustable and removable, which is great if I want to avoid the tan lines.
LEISURE
When we weren't hopping around rivers and chasing waterfalls, we had plenty of down time lounging and exploring the resort at Rancho Pacifico. The weather was quite humid and most days, the temperatures were in the mid 70s.
You may be wondering if we needed to cover-up in order to avoid the mosquito bites. Surprisingly, we had at most one bite the entire time we were there. Due to the altitude, there are hardly any mosquitoes so it was completely fine to bare some skin.
Wearing skirts, shorts, or sleeveless tops wasn't an issue at all; however, we definitely avoided the heels. There are a ton of areas where there is no pavement and there are plenty of stairs.
We stuck to wearing flats for the most part. The nights did get a little chilly, so we recommend bringing a light jacket.
You're going to want to explore one of the many beaches Costa Rica has to offer, so you should definitely pack a swimsuit or two. The swimsuit dress code seems pretty similar to what you would see people wearing to the beaches in the states. We walked around a family friendly beach and while we were driving around we noticed several areas that had a big surfing crowd. We had no idea how popular surfing was in Costa Rica.
The temperature during the time we went (May) made it easy to pack light for our trip. May temperatures didn't bring the unbearable heat, but the humidity and rain showers were definitely there. The only thing we packed that we ended up not wearing were our rain coats. We also recommend packing flip flops (for the beach or pool) if you don't want to buy them there.
Costa Rica is huge, so we definitely want to go back and explore other areas. Have you ever been to Costa Rica? We'd love to know where you went.
