When we were looking for cafes in Little Italy, San Diego, we came across Frost Me Cafe and Bakery on Instagram. Initially, the stylish decor caught our attention and it was a bonus that the cafe was within walking distance from where we were staying.
Frost Me Cafe and Bakery opened less than a year ago at the Piazza delia Famiglia. Having a cafe in this location is an awesome place to have a storefront. The Piazza delia Famiglia is a 10,000-square-foot European-style piazza with a gorgeous tiled water fountain, cobblestone street, and a beautiful view of San Diego Bay.
Location and curb appeal are a great way to get us in the door, but what really enticed us were the in-house pastries. We love pastries (who doesn’t?) especially when they are baked in-house. As soon as we walked in, we could smell the fresh pastries and since we arrived just shortly after they opened, everything was fresh out of the oven. There were plenty of yummy options, but we both were allured into trying the Morning Bun. The employees here highly suggested this pastry so we couldn’t pass it up.
It was a very generous portion and the smell of the cinnamon was intoxicating. The Morning Bun is a croissant dough rolled in cinnamon sugar and it was phenomenal. Not only were the flavors spot-on, but so was the texture. It was flaky on the outside, like a croissant, and just the right amount of gooeyness on the inside which was similar to a cinnamon roll. It’s impossible to describe just how delicious this amazing bun was. We loved it so much that we went back the next morning and had to order it again.
Frost Me is a cafe, so we did order coffee and tea and the beverages were delicious as well, but we really think the pastries here were the stars. They are open all day, and also serve European style savory dishes and alcoholic beverages. In addition, they serve cupcakes, cakes, and mini desserts with plenty of gluten-free and vegan options. If we lived in the area, we could see ourselves eating here all the time.
We were in downtown San Diego for the weekend and when we were exploring Seaport Village, we surprisingly came across another Frost Me storefront: Frost Me Gourmet. However, this one was slightly different from the one in Little Italy as it was filled with only cupcakes. We began talking to the friendly woman behind the counter, Katia, and she informed us that the local owners, Audrey Hermes and Jon Parker, competed in the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars and were the Season 9 champions. No wonder why the pastries were so good! Since Frost Me is known for their cupcakes, we couldn’t pass up on trying their creative cupcake flavors.
Crystal tried one of the cupcakes from Cupcake Wars called the Chocolate Dulce de Leche Habanero and I tried the Lavender Lemon Blueberry. They were both such unique cupcakes and the flavors were outstanding. We thought the size of the cupcakes were perfect. Not too big and not too small. It was just the right size to try more than one without getting that unpleasant sugar high. The frosting was light and the cake was moist, just the way we like our cupcakes. We also thought it was cool that we actually got to try cupcakes from a Cupcake Wars winner.
The Frost Me Gourmet menu consists of a rotating menu throughout the week, so if there is a flavor in particular you want to try, it’s best to check their online menu calendar.
We fell in love with both Frost Me locations and can definitely understand why they were Cupcake Wars Champions. The Little Italy location had a modern design in an awesome neighborhood and the Seaport Village location was charming and in a great area. If you are visiting downtown San Diego, we highly recommend visiting both locations.
