Visit the Sustainable Farm and Kitchen in Tampa, Florida at Fat Beet Farm

Fat Beet Farm is my new favorite eatery in Tampa, Florida. My friend was looking for a farm-to-table type of restaurant for us in the Tampa Bay area and found this gem in Oldsmar (about 20 minutes from downtown Tampa). Fat Beet Farm is a sustainable and educational farm that serves fresh eats from their on-site kitchen. Literally, farm to table.
It’s not a full service restaurant, but a store where you order your food from the cashier and wait for your order while they prep your meal. They have plenty of seating on their shaded, outdoor patios in the front and back of the building.
Fat Beet Farm has actually been around for years providing fresh veggies, flowers, eggs, and honey to local restaurants and they just recently opened their own eatery in 2021.
The family that owns the farm has also been around in Tampa for many years and Tim Curci is the founder of the popular restaurants, Bonefish Grill and Noble Crust.
I visited Fat Beet Farm on a Sunday afternoon and although it was fairly busy, we were still able to find a table pretty easily outside.
The menu is small, but they offer a great selection of sandwiches, pizza, soups, salads, pastries, and more. I ordered the Power Green Turkey that came with FB multigrain, pumpkin-spiced turkey breast, cheddar, honey mustard, tomato, and microgreens.
I usually ask that the tomato be removed from my sandwiches, but since they grow everything on their farm on-site, I wanted to see if a freshly grown tomato would make a difference. And it did. Everything on this sandwich was amazing. You can just taste the freshness of the veggies and the bread was fantastic too.
My friends got the Smoked French Dip that came with FB multigrain baguette, smoked prime rib, garlic butter, and beef jus. They were just as delighted with their sandwich as I was.
The best part, as always, is the dessert. They had many pastries and cookies to choose from that it was hard to decide what to get because they all looked so good. We decided on the Blackout Banana Muffin, Pumpkin Walnut Crunch Muffin, Chocolate Chip Cookie, Oatmeal Butterscotch Cookie, and the Pumpkin Cannoli.
Hands down, the best dessert was the Blackout Banana Muffin. It’s their most popular dessert made with super dark cocoa, banana pieces, and ripe bananas (it’s also dairy free). It was the best banana muffin I have ever had in my life and I’m not exaggerating. The muffin is so moist and the flavors are just perfect - not too sweet, but sweet enough to get that dessert satisfaction.
The other desserts were excellent as well, but this muffin just stole the show. I think the next best dessert to us was the Oatmeal Butterscotch Cookie.
I wish I could have taken an extra Blackout Banana Muffin home with me, but by the time I was done with my meal and went back into the store, they were all sold out.
Fat Beet Farm also has a section where you can take home chilled meals like Cauliflower Steak, Lemon Chicken, Sesame Chicken, BBQ Ribs, and more. They range from $10 to $14 per meal that serves 2 people. They even make their own salad dressing that you can purchase as well.
Next to the eatery is their sustainable farm and they do tours of the farm explaining their sustainable initiatives and how they function together. I was very interested in doing this tour, but they were all sold out. The tours seem to only be held once a month, but this may change in the future if it gets to be more popular.
I did a little research on how they make their farm sustainable and from what I learned so far, it’s very impressive. They have a biodigester that digests food waste and turns it into natural fertilizer, tanks to collect rain and conserve water, solar power that fully powers their aquaponic system, and so much more.
I also love that they have yoga classes, field trips for the kids, and volunteer days. The volunteer days are held once a month and you assist with various tasks on the farm such as planting, harvesting, removing invasive species, chicken tending, working with our worm farm, and many others.
I really want to volunteer to get a better understanding of the day-to-day farm activities, but the part about the worm farm got me a little scared because I get freaked out by worms. I wonder if they would still let me volunteer even though I refuse to deal with worms.
In any case, Fat Beet Farm is wonderful! I genuinely cannot wait to go back and learn more about the farm and get more of that Blackout Banana Muffin.
