I don't like to spend a lot of money on winter clothes since I only need them when I travel to colder climates. I live in Southern California where we don’t have real Winters. When I heard about thredUP, I thought it would be a great place to look for sweaters without breaking the bank for my winter travels. thredUP is an online secondhand store that has apparel for both women and children. I figured I would try them out since I had a $20 referral credit.

After spending about 20 minutes on the site, I found a 100% cashmere sweater from Design History that was advertised as, "Excellent condition. You might mistake it for brand new!". All of the clothing has detailed descriptions about their condition, which really helps me out. I like to know if there are any visible defects on used clothing.

I will admit I was a bit nervous and thought the description had to be a mistake since the price was very reasonable for a 100% cashmere sweater. But I had a referral credit, so I wasn't going to lose much if it didn't turn out the way I had hoped. I applied my referral credit and, at the time, thredUP had free shipping and a 20% off offer code for new customers. With all the applied offers, my grand total shipped was $4.89!!!

Promo email I received.

When I received my package, I was so relieved that the sweater was just as described. It was practically new and in perfect condition. Shopping on their site is just like going to a local consignment shop or thrift store where you have to hunt for those great finds. However, the only big difference is that you can filter out your preferences. They have a variety of categories from “Premium” to “Designer” and they recently added a new category called “Style Icons”. I like to browse the “Premium” section since this is where I can find like-new items that are up to 90% off the retail price.

I was so pleased with my order that I ended up making a few more purchases. Then I decided to use their Clean Out Kit. What is a Clean Out Kit? It’s the most convenient way to upcycle your clothes and do good for the planet. You can earn cash or credit or turn your clothes into cash for charities.

I requested the Standard Clean Out Kit where I received a prepaid shipping bag that I then filled with my unwanted clothing. If you’re not sure what type of items are accepted, the kit provides detailed instructions on what items they will take. The bag is fairly large and after I stuffed it, I dropped it off at my nearest FEDEX. That's it! Then I just waited for their emails. I received two follow-up emails regarding my Clean Out Kit. One stating that they received my package and the second one informing me of my payout amount. My options were to either use the credits on a future purchase or cash out and have the funds sent via PayPal. They really make everything easy and I like that they have textile recycling partners to repurpose unaccepted items.

I know how difficult it can be to find the perfect travel wear for your upcoming vacation. Whether you’re looking for a comfortable outfit to pack for a day at the airport or if you’re trying to map out the best looks for your next dream destination, shopping secondhand is a great way to build a stylish vacation wardrobe for a reasonable price.

Oh! One more thing. If you have any inquires, their customer service is superb. I had a question about one of my orders and they kindly responded right away.
