The Mysterious Pirate Tower at Laguna Beach, CA

Southern California just doesn't want to cool down (it's November and 90 degrees), so I decided to check out the Pirate Tower one afternoon at Victoria Beach. This beach is right next to Laguna Beach, but I was told that it was in a residential area. This meant that it is away from the tourist crowds and sorta private.

I had no idea this tower even existed and decided to google what it was all about. I thought I was going to dig up some crazy pirate stories, but what I found was a pretty normal story.

The tower was built in the 1920s as an enclosed staircase to the beach for William E. Brown (the resident and senator at the time). Since then the property has been sold several times.

We went during a low-tide so the Pirate Tower was easily accessible. I climbed up the stairs hoping to get a glimpse of the other side, but it was locked. Not surprising, but I was really hoping I could see what was behind that door.

The Pirate Tower is a cool site to explore, but even if you just wanted to go to the beach this is a great spot. It's quiet and the view is breathtaking.

A FEW TIPS

* If you can't find parking in the neighborhood or on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway), try finding a spot on Nyes Place just off of PCH. This is where I found unmetered street parking.

*. Try to go on a weekday. Less people and much easier to find parking.

* If you want an up-close view of the tower, make sure to go during low tides. You can download a free app to check the status of tides : "Tides Near Me"

* Use this address for directions to the Pirate Tower : 2713 Victoria Dr., Laguna Beach, CA 92651
