How Difficult is Mist Trail at Yosemite for the Average Person?

We did a handful of hikes on our trip in Yosemite and Mist Trail was by far the hardest hike for us. We aren’t avid hikers and typically do hikes under three miles with minimal incline. We were somewhat prepared for this hike to be a bit of a challenge, but we underestimated just how strenuous it was going to be for us. Mist Trail is one of the most popular hikes and is considered Yosemite’s signature hike so we definitely didn’t want to pass it up.
There are two parts to the trail and the first waterfall you reach is called Vernal Fall and then if you want to continue the hike, you will eventually approach Nevada Fall. We made it to Vernal Fall, but as a group decided to turn around and forego another two miles of steep hiking to Nevada Fall.

Distance
The hike to Vernal Fall was 1.5 miles (elevation gain 1,000 feet) which was a very steep hike pretty much the entire way. We had to take multiple breaks since we weren’t used to hiking a continuous incline. If we had continued our hike to reach Nevada Falls, the entire hike round trip would have been seven miles.

Hiking Time
It took us about 3 hours round trip. If you do the entire hike, the signs stated that it could take up to five hours. Since we took a lot of breaks, it took us a little longer to complete the hike to Vernal Fall. Even if you don’t need breaks, you’ll want to take a moment to view the gorgeous surroundings. The views are incredible!
Parking
We parked at Happy Isles Fen and walked on the boardwalk to the start of Mist Trail. Since we did this hike first thing in the morning, there was no problem finding a parking spot but they were filling up pretty fast. By the time we arrived back to the lot, parking was pretty limited.

What is the Best Time to Hit the Trail?
Since this is one of the most popular hikes, we recommend going right at sunrise. The trail is quite narrow in some parts and the last leg of the hike to the top of Vernal Fall is nearly 700 granite steps. Only a handful of people can be on the steps at a time so if it’s busy, you’ll have to proceed with caution and possibly wait for your turn. Since we went early, we didn’t have to wait our turn to climb the steps. We even had plenty of time to capture numerous group photos.

Another reason why you’ll want to start early is because the temperatures are much more bearable in the morning. We started the hike at 7:30 in the morning and it was about 65°F. This was the perfect temperature as it was quite a workout and mid hike we removed a couple layers of clothing. When we were coming back down, it was near 80°F and it was getting uncomfortably hot. We can’t imagine hiking up this trail with the sun beaming down on us.

As we headed back down the trail, we started to see the crowds and photo-op lines were beginning to form. There was one spot in particular where everyone stopped to grab a shot of the waterfall in the background. Surprisingly, everyone was pretty courteous and waited for their turn. You really can’t push and shove in this particular area on Vernal Fall because it’s narrow and someone can easily lose their balance and hurt themselves.

What Time of Year Did You Go?
We did the hike in early September and were lucky that the waters were still flowing. California experienced more rainfall than usual so we were lucky to see water flowing this time of year. It definitely wasn’t as powerful as peak season which is between April and June. We were prepared to be drenched from the waterfall’s mist since we read a handful of reviews that you would get wet. However, this was not the case since the peak had already passed so it was actually the perfect amount of flow to capture a photo without getting drenched.

Can an Average Person Do This Hike?
We like to think we are average hikers meaning that we don’t hike on a regular basis and we occasionally go to the gym. On a scale of 1 to 10, we would say this is a medium hike at about 7.5. It’s doable for the average person, but be prepared for the challenge and amazing views. The most challenging part comes as you approach Vernal Fall. The last few hundred meters are uneven steep stairs that are cut into the cliffside so you’ll need to watch your step. Be very cautious especially when going back down the stairs.
Was it Worth the Hike?
Absolutely! The scenery was sublime and the waterfall was simply stunning. It was such a breathtaking view after a strenuous hike. Although the trail was difficult along the way, we were surrounded by spectacular views which made the repeated breaks worthwhile. We are not avid hikers and we were able to hike to Vernal Fall and think if you are in decent shape, you can do it too.

Tips
We definitely wished we had purchased trekking poles. There were several people utilizing it and even advanced hikers were putting the hiking poles to use.
Bring bug spray. We were starting to get bit by mosquitoes and luckily we packed bug repellent with us.
Use the bathroom before you start your hike. There are bathrooms along the trail, but they may be under maintenance (that was the case for us).
If you visit Mist Trail during peak season (April-June), bring a raincoat and waterproof covers for your phone and camera if you want to take photos.
If you are prone to ankle twists, definitely wear a good pair of hiking shoes for this trail.
