Mansion on Forsyth Park: The Perfect Hotel in Savannah
/I love Savannah and was thrilled when I found out that one of my business trips was going to be in Savannah for 4 days this year. The best part was that we got to stay in one of the most beautiful and historic (my favorite!) hotels in the charming city at Mansion on Forsyth Park.
Mansion on Forsyth Park is part of the Autograph Collection Hotels, so I knew it was going to be a beautiful and luxurious hotel stay. Right when our taxi pulled up to the hotel, I was in awe of the Victorian Romanesque mansion. The actual hotel where the rooms are located was built in 2005, but the hotel’s restaurant, 700 Drayton Restaurant, located next door, is housed in an 1888 mansion that was once a funeral home.
As soon as we walked towards the entrance, the friendly staff greeted us and took our luggage as we were immediately checked in. The lobby is gorgeous with large crystal chandeliers, Versace furniture and interesting art pieces from Richard Kessler’s art collection.
My spacious room was gorgeous with a large, comfy bed (so comfy that it was hard to get up in the mornings), velvet chaise lounge chair and desk. The bathroom itself was huge with a soaking tub and separate shower room. If you want to watch TV while you are soaking in the luxurious tub, you can open the doors to the room that open from above the tub. If you’re a fan of Starbucks coffee, you’re in luck because they have a coffee maker with Starbucks coffee pods.
The hotel has a fitness center, bar, restaurant, pool, art gallery shop and a full service spa. The fitness center is small and dark, but it’s nice to have if you exercise daily. They offer fresh towels and water, which was a nice touch. The bar in the lounge area is nice to relax in, but be aware that they usually only have one bartender, so the service is a little slow. I don’t mind the wait, but I was disappointed that my margarita tasted awful after waiting 15 minutes for it. The pool is gorgeous, but tiny and I didn’t see very many people using it. I personally don’t like to lounge around in small pools, so I didn’t care for it.
The hotel’s restaurant, 700 Drayton Restaurant, was wonderful. We had a lovely ladies’ lunch and were seated right by the large windows overlooking Forsyth Park. This is the exact dining experience I think of when visiting Savannah. Our waiter, Terry, was fantastic and told us many details and stories of the hotel and the restaurant. He suggested a great drink, the Mansion Mule, which is like the Moscow Mule, but has a peach flavor to it and it was delicious!
The location of the hotel is perfect as you are right in front of the beautiful Forsyth Park, which has the most well-known fountain (built in 1858) and is the most photographed place in Savannah. You can enjoy a nice walk among the live oak trees and Spanish moss. It is also close to the breathtaking St. John Baptish Church and the Southern diner, Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room. The historic River Street is a quick 15-minute walk, but the hotel also provides a free shuttle service twice an hour to their sister property, The Bohemian, which is right on the river.
This was by far the best accommodation I’ve had in Savannah and I will be staying here again when I’m back in this lovely city. What is your favorite accommodation in Savannah?
