At first, I didn’t quite understand why someone from the states would want to fly all the way across the ocean to visit Universal Studios Japan. I had initially assumed that the experience would be pretty identical to the Universal Studios parks in Hollywood and Orlando, but I soon realized that my assumptions were wrong. The unique attractions and cultural influences really set them apart.

My relatives in Japan mentioned to me that Universal Studios Japan initially mirrored the parks found in the United States, but over time, the park's popularity began to decline significantly. In response to this, USJ made a huge shift and decided to start incorporating new attractions that are uniquely tailored to the Japanese audience and culture. This approach ultimately succeeded in creating a distinct and memorable experience for visitors, making the park more appealing to both locals and tourists alike.

This notable shift significantly boosted the overall number of attendees visiting the park. In 2023, it was ranked as the third-most visited theme park in the entire world, while also holding the title of the most visited theme park in all of Asia.

Here’s what makes Universal Studios Japan so unique and popular.

1. Anime Collabs

Japan is widely known around the world for its vibrant and diverse Anime culture, so it makes perfect sense that they have decided to incorporate various popular Anime elements into the park. I personally grew up watching a variety of classic anime shows such as Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, and Ranma 1/2, to name just a few of my favorites.

The anime attractions at the park change regularly, offering new experiences, and one year they hosted an exciting event called “Jump Summer,” which featured popular series like Dragon Ball Z and One Piece.

At the time of our visit, the temporary themed attraction that had taken the spotlight was Chainsaw Man, and they seriously went all-in with the immersive experience. Crystal, who is obsessed with Chainsaw Man, was in absolute heaven throughout our visit.

We eagerly rode the thrilling Hollywood Dream roller coaster which featured Chainsaw Man’s theme song, experienced the intense adventure of Chainsaw Man: The Chaos 4-D, and even indulged in a delectable treat known as Chainsaw Man Churritos, which was a sweet blood orange-flavored twist on traditional churros.

To top it off, a huge Chainsaw Man merchandise shop offered an extensive range of exclusive items. Crystal enthusiastically purchased a variety of items, including printed T-shirts, unique keychains, adorable plushies, tasty treats, and so much more. Parkgoers truly get an incredible opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the vibrant world of anime, making it a memorable experience.

2. Super Nintendo World

I was a preteen when Super Nintendo’s iconic Mario Kart first made its debut, and I was obsessed with the game. Super Nintendo World opened its doors in 2021, so it’s still fairly new and fresh for visitors. Previously, USJ was the only location that featured this theme park, but in 2023, Universal Studios Hollywood joined the fun by opening its very own Super Nintendo World.

However, Japan’s version is significantly larger in scale, featuring an additional ride, as well as a lot more interactive elements that engage visitors in unique ways. Basically, USJ offers visitors a more immersive and captivating experience compared to its counterparts. Apparently, Japan’s USJ also has a slightly wider selection of exclusive merchandise that includes unique collectibles, along with a variety of plush character headbands that showcase beloved characters.

3. Hello Kitty Design Studio

Without a doubt, the most beloved Sanrio character in the world is Hello Kitty, so it’s no surprise that USJ features a HUGE store dedicated entirely to her. This charming store offers an extensive and complete lineup of Hello Kitty merchandise, including everything from plush toys and apparel to accessories and kawaii treats.

USJ Tips

  • Online Ticket Sales - To avoid the long lines at the gate, definitely purchase your tickets online in advance. We were able to buy our tickets directly from USJ’s site. If you aren’t able to purchase from the site, you can purchase tickets via Klook.

  • Universal Express Passes - These passes aren’t cheap, but definitely worth it to avoid the long wait times. These passes offer priority access to select attractions. There are several Express Pass options, so it’s best to set some time aside to thoroughly go over all the options. We did this a couple weeks prior to our visit and the most popular time slots were already sold out.

  • Park Admissions - Familiarize yourself with the park admissions before your visit. Just because you hold a General Admission Ticket, it is important to understand that this does not guarantee you automatic admission into popular attractions such as Super Nintendo World or the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
