Robot Restaurant in Japan - The Most Wacky and Awesome Show You'll Ever Experience

I’ve been hearing a lot about Robot Restaurant lately, so I had to go check this place out for myself while I was in Japan. It’s a pretty expensive show at ¥8,000 (~$80), but if you go to Beauty of Japan and purchase your tickets in advance, you’ll get a 16% discount, making it  ¥6,700 (~$67) for the show.

Robot Restaurant serves food, but it’s more known for it’s show than it’s food, so I didn’t order anything as I read reviews that the food was just ok. I’m glad I didn’t order any food because while the show was going on, I would not have had time to eat my food as I was consumed by the show. More on that in a bit.

Robot Restaurant is located about 10 minutes from the Shinjuku station and it was relatively easy to find. Once you see the huge, bright sign, you give your confirmation number to the staff member and proceed to get your tickets inside. Our show started at 7:50 PM, but were told to show up 30 minutes in advance. There are multiple shows throughout the day from 4:00 PM - 9:45 PM.

Once you get your tickets, you walk across the street (only a few steps away) to another building and go through this narrow, bright-colored hallway to an elevator. You take the elevator up to a crazy bright, colorful room with lounge chairs everywhere. We sat in the back by the bar and a lady in a silver, glittery costume came out with two guys dressed as robots. They proceed to the stage and the woman starts singing some American songs as the robots play the piano and guitar. So bizarre and awesome. After about 20 minutes of the show, the group was led downstairs to the showroom. I swear we walked down 8 flights of stairs to this place. It was way down in the basement.

We were all assigned seats with tables and they were so tiny with barely any room to move around as you’re right next to the other table. The space was so tight that I didn’t feel like getting up to use the bathroom in between breaks because I was afraid I’d bump into the table next to me and knock their drink over (I’m a clutz so it’s guaranteed to happen).

Once everyone was seated and had their food and drinks, the show started out with a bang. Literally. The curtains opened up to a group of taiko (Japanese drums) drummers in colorful costumes. The stage starts to move towards the audience onto the floor and the sound was so captivating. As the drummers are playing, there are dancers everywhere coming up to the audience and keeping them entertained. I was just in awe of everything going on.

The second act was a story about an island getting attacked by robots and this was over-the-top awesome with giant animal structures fighting the robots. Each animal that came out was even better than the previous one and it was cracking me up.

The third act was super cool with dancers dressed in Tron-like costumes. They had neon linings around them and danced in the dark to Michael Jackson songs. Their performance was fantastic!

The final act had the whole cast coming out, wrapping up the show and thanking everyone. The entire show lasted about an hour and it just flew by! We were thinking about leaving the show a little early in between acts because we were so tired that night, but this show really woke us up and kept us entertained.

It was the most bizarre show we have ever watched, but so fun and entertaining! The pictures and descriptions does not do this show justice. You have to go watch this show for yourself! Would you go watch a show like this? Have you already seen it? Let us know in the comments below!
